Prepare Your Home For Spring

Now that it is beginning to become warm again, it’s time to start thinking about de-winterizing, and time to start freshening up our homes for the spring season. Here are some tips to do around the home to get it spring ready!

1. Declutter your space

When people think about spring cleaning, they think of deep cleaning and decluttering the home. Decluttering is the best way to get a fresh start and allows you to go through your belongings and organize. The best way to declutter is to go room by room and give a good look to everything you own. Make a pile of items you’d like to get rid of or donate, and find a place for everything you keep. While you’re at it, give the space a good deep clean!

2. Inspect the areas around your home

Spring time means thawing season. This is the time of year when flooding and water damage is most prominent, but with careful inspection and planning, you can protect your home this spring.

  • Start by checking your downspouts and make sure they are extended away from your foundation. This allows the water to drain away from your home and out toward the backyard or street.
  • Take a good look at the foundation of your home. Make sure there are no cracks that could lead to water damage.
  • Check your sump pump to prevent flooding in your home, make any necessary repairs.
  • Look into installing a back flow valve to protect against water entering the home
  • Make sure that you have good home insurance that includes Extended Water Damage Coverage and Above Ground Water Coverage.

3. Clean out your gutters

Check your gutters! Clogged gutters can cause damage to your home when water doesn’t flow away from the foundation.

  • Use a ladder to get onto the roof, remove leaves and twigs with gloved hands or a large gutter scoop. Place the debris in a trash bag.
  • Use a hose to flush out the gutters after you’re done cleaning. With the hose running, you’ll also find any leaks that need to be repaired.

4. Improve your curb appeal

Curb appeal is one of the most important parts of a home! It not only raises the value of your home, but it makes your home look welcoming to guests.

  • Start by picking up leaves and other debris. Use a rake to collect leaves and debris and use yard refuse bags for disposal.
  • This is a great time to help trees, shrubs and flowers start their bloom.
  • Power wash your home
  • Clean your windows
  • Mow the lawn and remove any weeds

5. Prepare your outdoor lounge space and enjoy!

It’s time to bring back your patio furniture and relax outside! It may not be quite warm enough to lounge in the sun, but it’s a great time to setup your patio or back yard.

  • Check your patio or deck for wear and damage and make any necessary repairs.
  • Bring your patio furniture out of storage. Wipe down each piece with a damp cloth, and patio furniture cleaner or dish soap for tougher dirt and stains. Set up your outdoor rugs , planters, lighting and decor.
  • Set up your barbecue, dust it off and give it a good inspection.

Now that your outdoor living areas are cleared, cleaned and prepped, you can enjoy the best of spring and summer weather!
